yes PS3 is different from PS2. like the xbox 360, the PS3 has a hard drive and a DVD player built in. I would go with an XBOX360 for now since sooooo many games are for it now-a-days, and you will have to wait for games on the PS3 to come for quite some time.. plus all the PS3 game are going to cost more than $50 bucks each.

I'd advise you to go with the PS3, but wait until about April or May (better yet June) to get it.

One of the things the previous answers overlooked is the "backward compatibility" of the PS2 and PS3. In my opinion, it's the key feature that gives the Sony Playstation systems better entertainment value for the money. Each new generation is disigned to play games from the earlier system. The PS2 can play PS2 and PS1 games, and the new PS3 can play PS2 and PS1 games, this allows players to still replay old Playstation games on the new system without having to digout the old one. If you get a PS3 you can still keep your favorite PS2 games, and give your old PS2 to a sibling/friend or sell it to Game Stop (or pawn shop) for a few bucks.

The previous answers do mention that there have been some problems reported with the PS3, but this is why I advised earlier that you wait 3-6 months. The first production run of a new game system always has some sort of bug or problem, but this is corrected in the later batches. The XBox360 also had several problems when it first came out, but now since it's been out for about a year most of the bugs have been fixed and the recent systems don't have the glitches of the earlier production. The PS3 and Nindendo Wii came out just recently, which is why you still hear reports of various glitches, in a few months all the problems would be fixed with software patches and production hardware tweaks. One of the known problems with the PS3 is with the backward compatability, and a handful of games from the old systems could not be played, but Sony provided a software patch that fixed this sometime around Christmas. This glitch in no way affected the systems ability to perform and play its own generation of PS3 games. In 3-6 months any glitchy systems from the first batches would already have been returned/recalled to be corrected and new production batches will encorperate the new fixes.

Again, because the PS3 is still fairly new, there only about 40 or so games currently out, but newer ones are always in the works. The Nintendo Wii also only has about 40 or so games right now because it's still new and the XBox360 had about the same number when it first came out. The only reason why the XBox360 has a larger selection now is because its been out for a lot longer.

The basic XBox360 system will run $300-$400 and each game is roughly $40-$60 on average. Playstation3 system runs $500-$600 and games are $60 each. The XBox360 may be cheaper, but the PS3 encorperates new Blu-Ray technology. The Blu-Ray technology is a more advanced DVD format with a higher data density capable of storing much more than standard DVD, which means that music, videos, and games recorded on Blu-Ray disk will have much higher quality. Blu-Ray is still fairly new itself, but just as DVDs replaced CD-ROMs, the Blu-Ray is the next advancement and will eventually replace DVDs. Though Blu-Ray is not very common right now, people that have a PS3 are already one step ahead, because as Blu-Ray becomes more common, other people will go out and buy Blu-Ray players, but PS3 owners don't need to because they already have one.

I'm saving up right now and plan to eventually get a PS3, I think its worth the money. I like being able to still play my old favorite games, and the Blu-Ray feature will become more useful as the technology becomes more common. I figure by June all the glitches will be worked out, and I'll have enough money for the system and Final Fantasy 13.

If you do get a PS3, go for the 60GB model, it may cost more, but there's a good chance new games, software options, and online capabilities may demand more memory to run at full capacity.

Ulitimately it's your choice and your money... I'm just offering my opinion.

Buying a game console really depends on which games you intending to play and how much money you are willing to spend.

For example, if you really want to play the Halo Series then I would suggest an Xbox 360.

The main difference between these two consoles is that the PS3 is much more expensive, but has a Blu-Ray reader built into it.
On the other hand, the Xbox 360 is the cheaper of the two and has the ability to play DVDs and Cd's, but can only play HD DVDs with a $100 accessory.

Check out these sites for specs etc.:
Xbox 360- http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/compare101.htm

PS3- http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/About/TechnicalSpecifications

Also, the Xbox 360 has been on the market for a whole year longer than the PS3 so there will be fewer issues and an Xbox 360 is much easier to obtain than a PS3.

not really, the PS3 just has better graphics. I've heard it's already being recalled and there are just a bunch of problems with it. go with a 360 or a wii. I have a Wii and I love it.
