We had to remove a few bushes on our new property also. We dug around them to expose roots, then put a strap around the plant and pulled backwards. They were easier to remove than I thought they would be. Do it in spring or fall, when the ground is soft.

Just take a shovel and dig out the bushes. That'll work fine, and there's little chance of anyone getting hurt, or the fence getting damaged. I've done it many times, thanks to an adventurous mother in my earlier years and a landscape-loving wife later on. Other techniques work, but if you've got a shovel, the plants are history waiting to happen.
And Happy New Year!

You could use a shovel, but the best way would be to uproot them. If you can, tie a thick rope around the bottom part of the bush and hook the other end to the back of a truck. When you move the truck forward, the whole bush should come up.

I took out some bushes from my backyard last summer and it was hard work because the bushes were pretty old and the roots went very deep. I would say use a shovel but you may also need some heavy duty lopping shears or even a saw if you encounter deep roots.

Dig all around them and take an awe and chop the bigger roots out. Then pull it out.
