First - don't ever take an "expert" advice on this alone. Do your homework! Check the website and what does it show from previous years. Brown is competitive, that means you need top SAT scores, averaging about 600 at least. Your gpa will be based on your academic college prep courses, and that needs to be strong. Better than 3.5 weighted. You need rigorous courses, but Brown will probably compare you to your high school, so if you've only taken 2 AP courses, but that's all your school offers, you'll get top points for rigorous courses. However, if you've taken 2 APs and your school offers 15 of them, you won't get as much "credit" for taking the most challenging classes over high school. You'll also need a profile that shows extra activities. Quality is more important than quantity however, so don't make the mistake of being a "member" of 20 organizations, with no leadership, commitment, etc. Pick something and do it well outside of the classroom. Sports are good, clubs are good, but volunteer work is much better. Evidence of leadership is what all competitive schools want. The big question is why will Brown be a better university if you're one of their students?

Be sure to ask people who know you well to write your letters of recommendation. And if your counselor doesn't know you well, it's time to help him/her get to know you. Make an appointment, take a scrap book and give him/her a crash course in you and your goals. What challenges have you faced in your life and how did you meet them? Where is your passion? How do you demonstrate leadership potential? What makes you tick?

Provide your counselor with a resume' to refer to when writing the recommendation. Ask if he/she will practice the interview with you? Be pro active and always, whenever applying to a highly selective college, have a good back up plan just in case you're not accepted.

Good luck!

Colleges will receive a copy of your high school transcript when you apply so they will usually see the cumulative (as it is the cumulative that is on your transcript). Ask your school registrar for a copy of your transcript and see whether it's cumulative or not. You can also ask if the college that you plan on attending looks at a cumulative or a separate GPA. Also, you should strive for those high GPA since a high GPA applicant is more likely to be picked than a low GPA applicant. As for the admission essay, that plays a very important role whether you're applying to a large state university or a small liberal arts college as the essay is really the thing that separates you from the rest of the pack. Hope this helps.

The old average SAT score was1390 while the ACT was 29

They do consider your GPA highly important. 90% of Brown students were in the top 10% of their high school.

That's a very good question. There's no one formula. Undoutedly, all of these factors play an important role in the admissions process. Brown provides some statistics on its admitted class at the following website:

Perhaps, this may help to answer your question. I know someone who is a professional admissions consultant who went to Brown. If you want some help with the admissions process, I can send you his website address.
