All of the above. I prefer boiling water on the stove. I do it every day. I like to add orange rinds, cinnamon sticks and cloves. It really makes the house smell nice. I'm sure there a lot of other things you can add to the water. Be creative and add something you like the aroma of.

warm dry air easily absorbs moisture. put a pan with lots of surface area into the return air section of you heating system. This may help a little. Put water anywhere around the house that it may evaporate. If you burn candles, set it up so that the candles are under a pan uf water. Be creative. Boiling water on the stove top is gonna cost too much though.

Put pans of water around the house. You can also keep a pan of water simmering on the stove and adding more as necessary. If you own a room size humidifier place it in the bedroom while sleeping and keep the door closed. It will make bedroom more comfortable and eliminate the dryness.

An overlooked factor in many houses is that the attic is very over-vented. This contributes to heat loss as well as vapor loss.
Try sealing up some of the vent space in your attic, and you may be surprised. Your heating bill may well be reduced, and your humidity problems reduced. In the summer, more venting is advantageous -- consider a temperature-controlled attic power vent or a large opening vent for use during the summer.
