although you will never be required to show your passport to enter to Mexico, you may have trouble entering back to the usa with out a passport is always wise to bring it with you every time you leave your country. wouldnt hurt to carry also an official id for any contingency

driving across from the u.s., you don't have to have one 'til 2008
