Yes - You are done.
Recovery is the easiest way.
Actually spy-ware and viruses try to get into autostart.
Throw them out of there and You are done no matter whether the files are still on Your HDD or not.
Delete the actual files also ( if You have not already ) - but if You cannot find them it does not matter much.

I'm amazed that you know it downloaded 33 pictures.
It could have disabled either your virus/spyware programs. If by restoring to a previous backup you mean that you created a disk-image and you will replace your current disk-image with the previous one then that should work. Norton Ghost is an example of such a disk image creation software, and I've never heard of a virus corrupting Norton Ghost's (or any other disk image restoration sw).
I wouldn't trust anything less than a disk-image restoration.
What I would be doing is downloading the spyware and virus software onto a CD from a known non-infected machine, so I could run them from there. I would also run autoruns from sysinternal to check for things in the auto-start sequence.

System Restore is a waste of space in my opinion, it's the first thing I disabled in my new PC. The answer to your question is NO, restoring won't help. Do some online scans with a couple of good anti viruses and be sure to disable system restore prior to scanning.
This page has some links to free online scans:

If you have down loaded and saved in a file it will not be undone by system restore. You have to delete such files.System retore will restore only softwarechanges maded to the system. System restore only helps you to restore the computer to an older working configuration. Detailed instructions are posted at http://fixit.in/systemrestore.html

I don't think the XP resore gets rid of files, only programs that were installed. You can probably find the pictures that were downloaded by searching on *.gif and use the date option also. Good luck
