I want to make some coffee jewlery for friends, however, the coffee beans just seem to break when I try and push a needle with thread through them or drill a small hole? What is the process?

Try heating a pin over a candle and poke the hole with that. That's the advice I found doing a search.

I LOVE this idea!! I am a coffee freak. I roast my own, and make my own espresso drinks besides drinking brewed coffee. I HAVE TO make some jewelry with my beans!! Thanks for the awesome idea!! I had never seen any coffee bean jewelrey before!

I did a search on coffee bean jewelry, and I found some great information at http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=23286.0

This stuff is awesome!! Thanks for posting the question! =)

I read somewhere in craft ideas about someone that made them and they said they heated the needle a little over a candle and it was easier to poke the holes thru the beans then. I've never tried this before or making anything other then coffee with coffee beans but worth a shot. good luck. ;o)

Freeze them before drilling.

Also put a small piece of tape where you are going to drill, and where the drill will come out, this will help it stop splitting.

According to web link below, clear varnish works best.

i've never actually heard of doing this but it seems cool. i would suggest maybe spraying them with a clear outter coat to make them stronger.
