You can learn by yourself and play really well.
however - consider taking an "online" course (for example - one of those reiewed at http://www.reviewsnest.com/LearnGuitar ) - it won't be expensive, and will make you learning easier, quicker and better

Yes! However, without lessons some of the finer techniques, such as harmonics, can be hard to master. I had lessons for a year or so and then stopped. Since i stopped the lessons i have become much better. I think it's down to how motivated you are. To help with motivation, there is a program called guitar pro 5. this program will let you write, download, edit and play guitar tabs which you can download off the internet. Basically, stick with it and you could become very good!

Hi, I have been a professional musician for over thirty years and I play bass guitar and keyboards. Yes you acan be a good guitar player if you stick in and learn the basics. My tips to you is to listen to every piece of information you can get and make sure you practice as much as you can. If you have the dedication and determination, you can go on and do great things. The music business is a very hard one and only a few of us musicians ever make it big.
The Bee Gees wrote all their own material and none of them could read a note of music so take comfort in that. Ask your parents about the Bee Gees and they will tell you about some of the great hits they wrote such as Saturday Night Fever etc. Keep going we need young dedicated musicians like yourself. Best of luck! M

i've been at it 40 years and i'm still learning - we never stop learning one way or the other. you will become as good as you want to be, just take it one step at a time and keep it as simple as you can - better to do a simple thing right than try for something falshy and mess it up. get some DVDs with lessons on, at least you might pick up some technique that way and that will make life a bit easier for you.

Yes definately. There are many resources and sites out there with free lessons on the net so you don't have to go out and get yourself a teacher. Try Harmony Central, it's a great site with lots of lessons, tips and hints.

Good luck and keep the faith!

it all depends on what you are happy with, if you are happy strumming chords to songs and such, you won't really need lessons as these days you can learn it from the net.

However if you want to be the next Julian Bream, lessons will be really be neccessary.

but if your heart is in it who is to say what you can do!

I look forward to seeing you on the TV in ten years time playing your own songs and thoroughly enjoying yourself.

A lot of famous artists have taught themselves guitar, one for instance is Teddy Geiger. Lessons are one hundred percent optional and based on personal opinion.

not necessarily. my ex guitarist can play every song ever written by led zeppelin and metallica, and he never took a lesson.
i've been playing bass lesson free for 11 years and i can play most tool and older metallica stuff [including Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth)]
Stevie Ray Vaughn never took lessons, either, and he was one of the best blues guitarists ever (in my opinion)
