Andrew Jackson was president in 1835 when the debt was paid off in full for a very short while.

No one president has ever done this. The current national debt is well over a Trillion dollars. The national debt has never been paid down. Not one single president will do this. Because if he did, his presidency (in his opinion) will have been wasted doing nothing except paying down debt. He or she will not be able to enabel any new programs because programs cost money. Also budgets would be slashed to make way foy money to be paid back instead of doing things with it. Like yourself, if you paid your own debts.
You would not have any money for yourself.

I don't think we did. Jefferson brought it to a very low couple million (almost to the point of wiping it off the map). But then we had a couple wars I think (1812, I think) and a couple Presidents that didn't pay much attention to the dept. Then the Great Depression really killed some hope, and the New Deal used money we already didn't have (dept again).
Then I think it went down hill from there and now with a couple trillion and the Iraq War isn't helping with the buget.

None. Some presidents have lowered the debt, but it will never be paid off in my eyes.

It has yet to be paid off, but I believe it was Jefferson, Madison, or Washington who believed it was necessary to establish its legitimacy and respect from foreign nations.

I want to say Jefferson though.
