Rain's the main issue -- we're talking B.C. coast. But we get some freezing cold and snow, sometimes with rain the same day, and plenty of wind. I guess sandwiching is best: some outer shell, some wicking layer next to my skin, and whatever layers in between. Should it have a hood, or would some rain hat work good enough?

So: what brand(s) do the outer job best? An MEC jacket? Pearl? North Face? Marmot? Red Ledge? Cabela? I'd like to wear it for the occasional half-day hike in the rain. But it also should look good enough to wear walking to a party or restaurant in town.

Fleece on the inside, synthetic vinyl on the outside... you know, like a snow coat.

My mom has this jacket that's totally waterproof- it's very thin, but if you get a larger size, you can layer warm jackets underneath it. I would look in a store like Eastern Mountain Sports or ****'s Sporting Goods. They have alot of these kinds of jackets.

I would check at the L.L. Bean website. One thing that they do that is valuable is that they list the temperature range at which their coats are designed to remain comfortable. This is useful when making comparisons of different coats.
