Well, there's a big difference between a beginning reader kindergartener and an advanced sixth grader. I'm reading the A to Z Mysteries to my first grade daughter -- they're written on a second grade reading level and she loves them.

The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis are good for a kid on a fourth grade reading level.

My son in sixth grade just finished reading City of the Beasts by Isabelle Allende. I read it too, and it was really exciting. I wouldn't recommend it for kids younger than he is.

You might get more responses in education, or you could go to your local library.
