as opposed to the millions of other REALLY hurtful things you can be called...being called gay is the most offensive and hurtful. Why is this worth fighting over?

A straight male totally secure in and comfortable with his own sexuality would be able to handle the situation you describe with humor, tact, generosity and grace. The attempt at denigration would roll off him as water off a duck's back. The frequency with which you witness this phenomenon speaks to the difficulty many straight males, particularly the youngest, in our society have in owning their own identity and sexuality. They are too unsure of themselves to be able to completely shut out all the external voices speaking to them. The only recourse they see is to take offense and react with anger. The more fortunate and capable among these eventually mature beyond such questioning of their own self-inadequacies. At that point they become more accepting of others in all their diversity.

Think about how it is used. Wheh used it is meant to be hurtful. If you wanted to verbally hurt a str8 male you would call him gay, right?

Alot of people use it to emasculate men. It is considered a form of weakness when used to insult others. It's right up there with the "n" word. The context of the "n" word has been blown out of porportions. People use the word "gay" to describe situations, people, places, and things.

For most people it is worth fighting for simply because it is used out of context.

When people use gay as an insult I get angry because I feel like they are saying something degrading to alternative sexualities. Fag is just like the N word, it's meant to be offensive.

f*g was originated to be used by straights who felt themselves superior to gays. Most gays dont like people insinuating that they are better than gays because of their sexuality. Being called gay isnt normally considered bad; only when people call something "gay" that they dislike do gays usually get mad because it just makes it seem like something being "gay" is a naturally bad thing.

Being called gay is NOT offensive, it is what we are. You are confused. No one is fighting over being called gay.

It's the intent and the meaning behind all labels that either make them acceptable or not. Not the words themselves.
