This is not a judgmental, anti-alcohol question. I have no problem with people who drink. Most of my friends do. But I'm just curious. I never liked drinking (designated driver here), but many of the people I know do. And not just one or two drinks.. They love to consume until they are completely wasted. If they go out to a function, the drinking becomes the goal, surpassing the original activity.
I, myself, hate the idea of not being in control of myself at all times. Anyone have any insight on what the appeal is, and if it's indeed a "rite of passage" thing, why haven't more people outgrown it?

Thanks for the input!

Some people are alcoholics. If "drinking is the goal" then they're probably alcoholics. If you read Stephen King's book, On Writing, in the first section he writes about being an alcoholic. He says that alcoholics often have high tolerance right from the start. He talks about being so wasted he doesn't remember writing Cujo, any of it. He also says that it's not a matter of being the sensitive writer, that he was in rehab with guys who drove garbage trucks.

Personally, I'd look at your friends and see if you really are getting enough from the relationships to keep going out drinking with them. It doesn't sound like fun. You can find people who are more like you.

More times then not, people who drink have deep seeded problems, and some not so deep. The vast majority of people who drink do so because they dont like reality, and arent happy with their life. Old habits die hard, and many who start young, stop growing mentally and stay immature. In addition, you will notice that many who drink, are never happy when sober, or comfortable in social settings when not drunk. Over time, drinkers deplete their brain of neurotransmitters that enable them to be happy. I mean, is reality that bad? Ya booze.....ya lose!!! :) Look at people who drink, and look at where they are in life!!! Also, you will notice that those who drink will try to bring you down with them and justify their actions, they are quick to judge those who dont drink, because it forces them to take a look at their unhappy life, and they dont like it.

I don't know about the party people, I don't understand them myself. When I used to drink to excess usually something was hurting me and if I got drunk it stopped hurting for awhile because I was not thinking about it. It was always still there when I woke up though and a hangover to go with it.
