Life on earth will continue unless there is an event of such magnitude that life can no longer be sustained. This kind of cataclysm on earth is highly unlikely in the near future. An event of this mangitude has not ocurred in the last 4billion+ years.A much more likely event is something along the lines to the KT or PT extinction events which killed 50% and 90%(respectively) of all living species. The Permian/Triassic(PT) extinction event ocurred approx 255 mya and is believed to have actually wiped out 99.5% of all living organisms on the planet!! It is widely belived "The Great Dying",as its also known as, was a result of a collapse in the food chain from the bottom up. The fossil records show that photosynthetic plants were greatly effected which caused starvation among herbavores, and ultimately starvation among carnivores and omnivores.among the groups effected the least were scavengers and charrion eaters. This pattern of extinction suggests a significant drop in sunlight reaching the earths surface. This could be caused by an impact or volcanic activity, or as some suggest a combination of both.To answer your question i believe that mankind can and is currently causing a great change in the biosphere. Mankind may also cause a sudden catastrophic change ie nuclear armegeddon. The current trends do not bode faverably for life as we know it. As populations increase logrithmically, one gets a sense that there is going to be a population correction in the future. will man survive?, will we survive the next catastrophic impact event? possibly.will life survive? well, based on the historical record theres a pretty good chance that life will inhabit the planet until the sun bakes the planet in a couple of billion years. Mother Nature will survive, Mother Nature as we know her may not. -Have a nice day :-)

When i read this question i thought that million would be after five!
The Jehovah's witnesses say that the end is nigh but i don't really reckon it would be in five years but who knows!
Anyway i think that it could be possible that global warming may be the culprit. In the 1950's the fogs used to be incredibly thick; consisting of pollution as well because the big American chuggers or trucks used to blast out lots of smoke. However, in India there where humongous tanks with very big firepower, then again the smoke was awfully black and thick and stunk of Sh*t!
Yet again, it was incredibly cold those days.
Anyway, the reason could be as some people believ that the earth is just going through a stage where in a period of time it would tilt more closer to the sun, just like venus did when we could see it.

Approximately 99 percent of all species that have ever existed on earth have become extinct. For complex organisms like ourselves the lifespan is about 4 million years - about where we are now as a species. (Source - Bill Bryson: A short history of nearly everything).

We may last another 5 years, but sooner rather than later our number's gonna be up. Humanity is just a very brief but incredibly destructive evolutionary error, that the earth certainly won't miss. The planet and its other species will be much better off without us.

Rest assured the earth will always remain. It is impossible for this planet to be destroyed.

The sun isnt going to supernova any time soon, sure the odd war here and there might break out, the odd natural disaster but the Earth will carry on.

Human beings? Well thats up to us isnt it. While human beings are very destructive creatures and are indeed unique in their ability in nature to wipe themselves out, there is an uncanny ability for human survival.

Plus if like me you are a religious person, you may find yourself drawn to the words that "This earth will never be brought to ruin."

Rest assured... while a short sighted vision of the future may seem bleek, the bigger picture is beautiful.

Ohh and just a little add on, I am one of Jehovah's Witness's and when it is said that the end is nigh (A bit over the top) that is meant as a warning to the wicked people alive. Their end is coming. It is the belief of Jehovah's Witness's that God will bring to ruin, those ruining the earth.

Cool thought huh? Feel free to email me - sytothemax@yahoo.co.uk

Ignoring prophecy and religious end of times stuff, which I admit is interesting but.. well, it's never been right before.

Yes and it is almost impossible that it WON'T.

Even in cases of Global Nuclear War, Global Warming, an Ice Age and even large space impacts, there are likely to be survivors and many of them.

The only thing that truely threatens the very existance of our race is a 'Planet Killer' Meteor or a Comet. The sort of thing that would annihalate all life including microbes. Humanity is very addaptable and we already have bunkers and that sort of thing to survive such impacts. We would all die in that case because there wouldn't be any life for us to feed on.

It would really pretty much take an act of God to wipe us out.

Five years, yes, but I don't hold out much hope for the human race in the long run. We claim to be the most civilised beings to walk the planet yet we kill each other, we rape the planet of its resources and we let people die of hunger. Despite knowing all this we don't stop it.
Mans greed and arrogance will get the better of him one day.
