i am going to be done with undergrad soon, and then i will apply for medical school in june 2007. it takes one year to complete the application process, and i need to do something in that year. Medical schools look to see if you are passionate about what you are doing, and what you are gaining from it. I am very interested in community service, like Americorps. But i am more very interested in arts like photography and martial arts, two things which i would love to be devoted for one year to. But i feel as if something like Americorps would be better for my medical school applications.

Does anyone have any ideas on what i would do, or how i should decide what to do during my year off?

If you can travel with Americorp that would be great. You would be able to photograph meanwhile. Perhaps you could travel overseas and gain some new experiences with the Red Cross. Community Service is certainly favored in the ap. process, besides it will help you grow. If you're advanced in the martial arts perhaps you could assist in teaching a class for children.

I also will be applying to med school soon and I honestly have no idea what I want to do.

Americorps is one option.
There is also a program through the Japanese embassy where you can teach in Japan for a year as a salaried teacher. Great opportunity to experience some authentic dojos and travel Asia.

You could also work with something like the flying doctors in Australia (http://www.flyingdoctors.org/). I don't know what qualifications they would want, but they can always use staff that are willing to travel and it would also look good on your resume.

To anyone looking at a break between schools like you are facing, I would definitely recommend travel. Once you start medical school you are looking at a marathon of coursework and residency that won't permit this kind of freedom.

you only live once and you may only get the chance to go with the photography and martial arts once. if you feel confident about how your schooling went before and you think you can get into medical school without the americorps then i say take the year to do what you want. have fun, you may never have this chance again.

Join one of the international aid organizations, perhaps Doctors without Borders, and spend the year in Africa helping doctors by doing support stuff and actually contribute selflessly, not for you, but for the good of the world.
