for that number, about how many:

lands?

creature spells?

give me a range, like 45-50 for example.

usually 60 is the ideal number for a deck. you want 20-24 land depending on what the type of deck and it's mana needs. in terms of creature spells, it depends on the type of deck, so that question is impossible to answer without more specifics on the type of deck you want to build. lay out the card in your deck in order of increasing mana cost so that you make sure you can play something each turn. for example if you have 10 cards that all cost 4 mana and 1 card that costs 3 mana, you should put less cards with 4 mana and more with 3 mana. the deck shouldnt be more than 80 cards and about 1/3 of your deck should be land

I'm gonna agree with Bob above, the recommended number is 60, but I would personally suggest shooting for 64, with about 1/3rd of those (20-24) being lands, 1/4th of it being creatures (15-17), and the rest spells and artifacts, unless the deck is based around certain card types, then substitute as you see fit.

ideal range is right around 60. why? it weighs odds of getting a card (seeing as your are limited to only 4 of one single card) vs the amount of cards to fit to a strategy.

a good rule of thumb for lands is 1 land for every 3 spells. if you have a multicoloured (4-5 colours gets tricky) but the same rule applys ie. for every 3 blue spells put in one island (or equivlent). with 4-5 colours even it out, focus a bit more on your primary colour (for example in my domain deck i focus on forests to get my lands out quick, so i put more green cards in), and even it out with some other mana converting spells/abilities or multicoloured land (like mana cylix and city of brass).
