If she wants to have a natural childbirth, the best thing you can do is support her decision. Don't become one of these people who tells her she should just have an epidural or the pain will be SO horrendous. You could also find out about hiring a doula to help her with her labor. If it's not something she can afford, maybe you or some other friends or family can pitch in. Women with doula's have a much higher success rate for having natural childbirth. Other ways to support her decision is reading up about natural childbirth yourself, encouraging her to go to a Bradley or ICEA childbirth class instead of a hospital one, helping her pack a bag full of tools that will help a mother during natural childbirth, and by being a calming presence around her that she can talk to and be encouraged by.

I am too!
I think all women get a little Cold-Feet before their first. I would suggest an Epidural because it numbs you from the waist down. Yet it doesnt make you all messed up and goofy. You can still feel pressure so you know when to push.

Also -people say its the worse pain you will ever go through but the quickest to forget... once the baby is born.

Think about hiring a labor doula. This is a person who will be there with your friend from the very beginning to the very end, help her through the pain and generally support her pysically and emotionally. Some insurance companies cover this, some dont. These women dont come cheap so helping to pay for one would be a great way for you to help your friend. Dona.com and i think CAPPA.net can help you locate a labor (or birth) doula. Good Luck!

give her lots of support. I had a completely natural (no drugs, vaginal delivery) childbirth in July with my first baby. My husband and my mom were both there to keep me focused and strong. If that's what your friend wants, then that's what she needs from the people around her.

Also, have her look into pain management options that aren't a medication. For example, meditation, sitting in a birth tub, sitting in the shower (hot water on the small of your back does wonders!) and even the TENS machine or sterile water injections.

I used all but the TENS machine and got through 15 hours of labor with agonizing back labor that went down my legs. So I know these things work. but it also takes determination and a great support system from the people around you.

Good luck to her!!

We are all afraid of the pain but about all you can do is tell her she will have a beautiful baby and the pain will be like a distant memory.

it is scary having a baby. but when it's over it is totally worth all the pain when you see that little baby look up at you :) just remind her that she can do this....women's bodies are amazing and they are made for childbirth.

You and your friend have a talk with a midwife who knows different ways of normal (vaginal) birth with all advantages and disadvantages.
