Saying that you gave away your virginity is not exactly true.
First of all, when you do have sex for the first time, you are not "giving it away." When your virginity is gone, it is gone, and it is not going to anyone else. When you do loose your virginity, a will it be given to someone else? No. So saying that you are giving it away can be confusing and incorrect.
But your virginity is something special to you. When it's gone, it is a loss. Whether you wanted it to be gone or not. That's why society calls it "losing your virginity."
P.S. When people have been victimized, i.e involuntary rape, they did not give up their virginity. It was taken away by someone. Think about that.

It's not as if you give it to someone who then gains something that you lose. You can only "give it" *to yourself* in return for sexual experience. What bugs me is the idea that, somehow, when a woman/girl first has sex, the man/boy is "getting" something special. That's just dumb.
I don't argue with the idea of "losing" virginity, because it's not like losing a material asset, but it IS losing a kind of innocence ... you always gain experience when you lose innocence, but I think it really is a "loss" for lack of a better word.

You are right society is giving away their virginity(those who live in society's standards) but some one who has been raped has lose it. I am getting tired of hearing many of the youth of America making their first priority is "losing" their virginity. it wasn't an accident, and it isn't an object as well, at least an object you can replace.

Actually i've always questioned this stupid term and i never liked it..
I prefer to use (Expired).. and i hope to find more ppl using it one day..
it will not leave any residual regret in ur soul or over a guy.. cuz it doesn't give him any priviliges nor make u lose any ;)

I never thought of it that way, i guess it is more of having given it away. It's not like you didn't know where it went or why. There are many terms that we often use that are not all that apropriate, this being one of them.

It's "lost" if you regret it later; it's "given" if you don't.
Even when sex is consensual, it doesn't always leave the participants feeling happy and proud about the experience.

Both terms are offensive. Don't perpetuate them.
