How abridged? You can get summaries, or the book. Reading the actual book is your best choice, because even abridged editions leave out certain plot points, and, really, abridged books are going to be the downfall of literature. Great Expectations is not a hard read and is a pretty good story (the annoying kid doesn't always get his way).

Depends who abridged it, and how it was printed. There is probably more than one version abridged.

It's a very short book anyway, one of Dicken's shortest and very easy to read. Reading it abridged would be like drinking diluted diet coke - go on, be brave, read it in the original.
