I did this for a Christmas Temp job, and it isn't an easy job! Firstly the 8 hour shifts that i did were long and busy non-stop in the run up to Christmas. Standing for 8 hours in a small space was hard and caused general all over aches, learning all the PLU codes for fruit & veg was a challenge and they constantly sent underage people in to buy booze to see if i would sell them it or not, and if you're caught - you're fined and can also be arrested. Rude customers are part of the job, packing bags for people who will just stand there and watch you while you pack about 12+ bags for them, then complain you've done it wrong. Different forms of payment can be tricky, and often things don't scan at the correct price and everyone will blame you. If your till is out by even 5p, you have to explain why and more often than not, the tills are old and don't work properly. Not a job i could do for long!

Many years ago, I worked as a supermarket cashier. As far as the actual ringing up of merchandise, handling different forms of payment, the job is not difficult at all. Some stores have scales that customers can use to put in the correct code for produce that will print out a tag to be scanned. For the stores that do not have that, cashiers do need to memorize produce codes so they don't have to keep looking up the codes and will have fast moving lines. The single most important skill to have is to be attentive to the customer and be able to communicate easily with strangers. Standing on one's feet for prolonged periods of time can be more physically taxing than walking for the same period of time, so good shoes and proper body mechanics is important.

My sister has done this job before and she says it's not as easy at it seems. You have to learn a lot of produce numbers and other random numbers. You have to learn how to take many different forms of payment. You have to know how to make people tax exempt. You have to know how to change prices if something scans wrong. You have to know how to react if you get a rude customer. You have to know how to bag groceries correctly because there wont always be a bagger. You have to know which coupons are real and which ones are fake. People will try to give you fake coupons.

Its not too difficult, however it does involve working on your feet, standing in a very limited space, for your whole shift. That is what does make this kind of job difficult. You need to have people skills, and be aware of your surroundings, so that you do not incorrectly ring up a bill.

It's very easy - or at least it was when I did it. They'll not let you on till you know everything. One downside is feeling like an extension of the conveyer belt!

The scanners do the majority of the work for you. I would imagine it's quite easy.

It really isn't hard once you learn how to look up the produce codes and the register you have it licked , then your only challenge is boredom.
