Blimey - Thanks for that! Truly the best 'Man In The Moon' image I have ever seen! How bright is it?! A 'Halo' around the moon is a common sight and it occurs when high thin clouds containing millions of tiny ice crystals cover much of the sky. (It is cold outside isn't it - I could have cut glass with my nipples when I came back in!) Each ice crystal acts like a miniature lens. Because most of the crystals have a similar elongated hexagonal shape, light entering one crystal face and exiting through the opposing face refracts 22 degrees, which corresponds to the radius of the Moon Halo. Hope Helps! Oh - and it is WAY, WAY bigger than a 'mile' across!

Its a halo, brought about by technique of the refraction of the sunshine in ice crystals interior the ambience.. Its commonly a community element yet ill take a glance as Ive not considered an exceptionally sturdy one. EDIT Awww too cloudy right here in Cumbria. The moon did peek out for a 2d yet i did not see a halo. became hoping to get some photos :( >>yet why are there no stars interior the hoop? purely outdoors?<< because of the fact the refracted easy from the moon is brighter. comparable reason as there is not any stars interior the day time.

The halo effect gives extra light at full moon and is known as a Hunter's Moon.

It's a lunar halo. you get the same phenomena around the sun. It has something to do with light refraction through ice crystals. It could indicate a change in the weather.

Not visible here. Usually caused by ice particles in our own atmosphere

It's light refracted through ice crystals.
