I know that it was the Reppublica serenissima di venezia, but why they chose to call it Serenissima?

It is often referred to as the Serenissima, which is Latin for its title when it was the republic "Serenissima"

Serenissima means "The Serene One"...it's in reference to Venice's location on the lagoon
