you have an egine that misses. the engine will shake (depending on how many cylinders are dead). The check engine light will flash is its too extream. But also if you have an older truck it could be the plug wires, cap, rotor. or on newer truck the COP. So a little bit more info on what you drive would be nice. This is why scantools or engine analizers are nice because you can see what is going wrong. Because not enough/too much fuel or air will cause a misfire. Most newer trucks have 100K mile plugs in them so if you are near or over that you might want to replace them and the fuel filter. here is an old time trick. Remove the plug wires one at a time and see if the engine changes, as ins runs rougher, and if it does put it back on and move to the next plug. You will find it when you dont notice a change in the engine. But be carefull you are putting yourself at risk of being shocked. Trust me, itll let you know its there. so dont try this if you have a heart problem. Maybe a little more info on your truck would help.

That's pretty simple. It seems to run pretty good until you put the engine under a load, and then it starts to mis fire, shake, and pop. A spark plug breaks down more under a load such as going up a hill than it does just moving on level ground. Get it in a hard pull on a steep hill, and push it down to the floor, and you should know right away if you have a plug breaking down. If you have a standard shift it is easier, as you can leave it in high gear until it gets slow and then push it to the floor. This should cause all kinds of popping and shaking. With an automatic you will have to keep it in as high of a gear as you can and with all the gas you can without it down shifting, and the problem will show up.
Glad I could help you. Good Luck!!!

The easiest thing to do would be to take one of the plugs out and see what it looks like. Is it covered in black? White build up? What is the gap on the plug? How long has it been since they were replaced? If you are not sure when they were replaced last then it will help a lot to put new plugs in that are gapped correctly. What specific truck and year?

Bad spark plugs and bad wires usually cause misfires when they're under heavy load, like going up a steep hill or towing. That would make your car feel like it was jerking.

In a Truck, In a Car it doesn't matter. It will start hard and run like crap. If you can't do it , have a friend pull them out and check them. They are about $2 a piece to replace. Maybe you should have your friend check your oil too . If you want to keep driving this vehicle I would suggest having it looked at by someone.
It sounds like you just put gas in it and Drive it

poor gas mileage, missing bad usually you can feel lagging, the best way is to take one out to see if it fouled or mis-gaped
