First scans are normally round about 10 - 12 weeks, this is whats known as your dating scan, and to have a rough idea of the babies age.
Then you normally have a scan between 16 - 20 weeks. This is an in-depth scan,as all the babies measurements are taken to make sure that the3 baby is growing at the appropriate rate for your pregnancy.
However,if you are Diabetic, you'll have scans on a fortnightly basis until you are about 32 weeks, then weekly after that until the baby is born.
The reason women with diabetes in pregnancy have more scans is because the baby tends to put on a lot of weight very quickly, and this causes problems for the mother as well as the unborn child.

If you are in the UK, you get a dating scan around 12 weeks and a foetal abnormality scan at 20-21 weeks. However, I believe in parts of Scotland you only get 1 scan. If there are any risk factors (such as early bleeding, previous problems or suspected difficulties) you will be offered extra scans, either early or late on accordingly. The 20 week scan is where you can see all the details of your baby, although you will be offered a picture at both- you may have to pay for the 20 week scan pic.

1st scan at 12 weeks, this is a dating scan where they take measurements to gain an accurate age of the foetus, don't worry if this puts you back a week or so, it's really just a guide line. 2nd scan should be at 20 weeks, this one checks development and if there are any problems they will be detected here, it's a more detailed look at the organs, spine and brain. any problems i.e high blood pressure and you may be scanned every 4 weeks to monitor progress. well, my 1st looked like a peanut with aems, one leg and either a HUGE penis, or the umbicial cord...lol. cute tho. u could also see the eyes, i think the lips too (already giving mummy kisses), the heart and stomach. my second looked like a real baby (wow...wondered why i was getting fat!) the second scan will be longer than the 1st as they check measurements and if the heart is working fine and they want to check the spine as well. but its all so cute!!! and be prepared to cry on u're 1st one! i made the massive mistake of wearing make-up...i looked like a panda when i came out!

teach me 2 read. the 1st is normally at 12 weeks and the second is about 20 weeks. u generally only get 2 scans unless (like me) they can't see somethng on the 2nd scan or ur having problems that they want to keep an eye on

All ObGyn's are different. With my 1st pregnancy I had an old fashioned male doctor who didnt do a 1st trimester scan to date the pregnancy, he rather "felt" the uterus, with my 2nd pregnancy I had a scan at 7 weeks, saw no heartbeat on a low-resolution portable, went back at 9 weeks and saw my babies h/b, then had another scan at 14 weeks b/c of pain on my left side, then at 18 weeks to determine gender and any defects, 29 weeks for 4D, and finally at 38 weeks to check size of baby, with my current pregnancy I had one in hospital (ER) at 4 weeks b/c of problems, 6 weeks to follow up with my ObGyn and another at 11 weeks for my 1st official Ob appt. - it all varies, and if you are wanting more or less ultrasounds you should interview your obstetricians and ask what their standards for u/s are. I personally love having u/s's so I stuck with my 2nd child's dr this time around! Good luck!

In the UK, it should be 12 weeks and 20 weeks. The first is a dating scan, and the second is more thorough and checks for any potential problems.

1st scan - 12 or 13 weeks
2nd scan - 20 weeks (this is the one where they can tell you the gender)

In the uk your most important scan is at twenty weeks, all other scans are generally just precautionary, so you may find you only have one. Altho you find that you get one at 30-35 weeks just to make sure all is well and that baby is sitting in the right position. hope this helps

You will have your first ultrasound the first time you see the OB, around 9-10 weeks. This is just to confirm that a baby is present and in the right place.
The second ultrasound will be 16-20 weeks, this will be a long one in which they look at the body parts.
