How come hispanics or mostly dark hispanics are not reprsented in the U.S media. I'm pretty sure there are a lot of them that do understand english, especially the youger generation who are raised in the States. Hispanics make up 13% of the U.S population and blacks make up 14%, yet Blacks are given more U.S media attention regarding entertianment, music, tv, magazines ect..

This is an excellent question that I often have asked (in my head). At this time, there are actually more Hispanics in America than Blacks, but you wouldn't know this by looking at the TV, listening to the radio, or following politics.

I think it has something to do with the broken relationship that African-Americans have with America. Slavery, Jim Crow Laws, and other events have created a past full of such hostility that "America" feels the need to mend that past. Basically, Blacks are also underrepresented, yet they demand it more than Hispanics.

Why does it have to be a Hispanic Vs. Black thing? How long did it take for blacks to be represented in the media (in a positive way)? A very long time. Hundreds of years of history in this country, the civil rights movement, etc. I could be wrong, but I think the US media for the most part is meant to represent the US. Especially being that the US Government is pretty much in charge of the media. Primarily, white people. Then the blacks. Now there are fairer skinned Latinos and Asians being represented. Eventually it will happen, it just takes time.

Dark Hispanics are very unappealing (i.e. ugly) to the American public. A television character played by a dark-skinned Mexican is unacceptable because the image embodies all the negative stereotypes about Mexicans: stupid, lazy, filthy, ignorant, sleazy...
The program would fail.

Univision (for example) reflects Mexico's discrimination towards indigenous people by only showing light skinned entertainers. Dark people are ignorant peasants in Mexico. Many Mexicans who come here are also very classicist.

It's not just dark skinned Hispanics....how many dark-skinned mainstream singers are there (female singers)? America has always had an unspoken rule of the lighter you are, the better. Darker-skinned people, regardless of race, aren't really accepted as much as lighter skinned and white people.

They are represented very well in mainstream media, I have no idea what you are talking about. Every time I turn on the evening news I see plenty of them arrested for gang related crimes and sneaking across borders.

This is America, blacks and whites have always dominated, and will continue to dominate the American music industry, they therefore, get more media coverage. Black and white Americans speak our national language, ENGLISH! he who dominates, rules!
