Is there anything that I can use to pick up pennies magnetically? (recent ones, not the real old pure copper ones)

Is there a type of magnet that I could buy/find/make? Could I buy or build an electromagnet?

Our newest cents are made out of zinc coated with a layer of copper. Zinc is non magnetic as well as the copper. The only reason 1943 cents can be picked up by a magnet, is that it is zinc coated steel. Most modern vending machines, use a system that can tell a coins, so called metal signature. That is why the Sac dollar is made of what it is, for it has the same signature as the Anthony dollars even though both are made of different metals.

Sorry, but no. U.S. currency is designed to be non-magnetic. Why?

Because one of several ways to detect slugs in vending machines is to use a magnet. And I'm pretty sure they don't want the real stuff to give a false positive (or negative).

Only if you have magnetism in your hands can they pick them up. Or. don't drop them and you won't have this problem.
