Well, some people (including myself) would claim that America is the greatest country on the earth. Others would disagree. If it is not, then which country is the greatest, and why? I believe USA is greatest because it has saved the world (and Europe, specifically) from darkness, championed freedom and democracy, is a large center of western culture, promotes new technologies, and the list goes on. I admit that the US has its dark points in history, like its dealings with Native Americans and its -appearance- of imperialism, but every country has had its dark hours. Nevertheless, if the USA is not the greatest country in the world, then which one is?

This is exactly the sort of thing that makes Americans look arrogant, uninformed, self-congratulatory, nationalistic and self-important. The only people who would agree with you on this are fellow Americans. Are you trying to annoy everyone else?

Don't kid yourself, there are A LOT of good countries in the world. There is no 'best' country.

Well, I was born here in the US and as a woman that has been a blessing. There are a lot of other things that I like best about America. But why does it have to be "either/or?"

There are a lot of wonderful things about different countries. I love that the Netherlands has such liberal policies.

I love the art and statuary of Italy.

I love the food of France.

I love the zest of the Greek people.

I think the eastern religions have focused on a lot of things that western religions have not that are much healthier. A coming together of some of each would feel healthier I think.

We are the most stressed out country in the world. That brings some good things as far as production, but keeps the medical professionals very busy.

I believe the European Renaissance was a very beautiful thing.

Many, many things that we think we have invented in the western world were invented centuries earlier in Far east.

We've been in existance for a few hundred years. Let's see how well we're doing after a couple of thousand years.

I am a proud American and it is my fav country, but I think we can love our country and still see all the good from others.

Blessings to all for a happy healthy 2007.

For starters, quantifying a country in terms of "greatness" is backward and impossible. How do you define great? To say that the "usa is the greatest country" is an open ended statement without any backing. Also, there are flaws in this paragraph.
Firstly, the United States did not save Europe. Europe fought the second world war longer without the Americans than with them. Also, without the efforts of Canadian spies working in the Rossevelt administration (who gave faulty information and propaganda to the Americans), The US would never have joined the war effort. (Alternatively, one could argue the point that Americans were originally saved by the French in their war of independence against the British).
Secondly, the United States did not and has never championed freedom and democracy. The true champion of democracy was ancient Greece, who created and maintained the original idea of Democracy. In the world today, democracy is best represented through the Westminster system of government (the system used by the countries of the British Commonwealth). The United States does not use this system. And to the question of freedom, one must only point out that over 2.2 million people in the US are currently imprisoned. Are we to believe that there are more criminals per capita in your country? I doubt that very much. I would simply say that you believe much less in rehabilitating your criminals and more in imprisoning, or even killing, them. To judge the soul of a country, one has only to look at how it treats its poor, its degenerates, its ill. You seem to treat all of these rather poorly.
It's impossibly to name the "greatest nation", but assuming that the US must be it by sheer size, force, and ignorance is wrong.

I think you erred in your analyses, I don't think the US saved Europe, it just promoted a different outcome, there is very little culture in the US, we are often ridiculed because of our lack of culture. We have infiltrated many countries and overthrown governments, we have allowed and promoted the importation of cocaine into our country and we have trained people throughout the world to torture and kill. We even helped Hussain and Bin Laden, our government does terrible things throughout the world. We also have a very crappy health care system. There is a lot of freedom in this country and economic opportunity, but the Bush administration has done a lot of harm to our freedom and economic opportunity. There are other nations that may be better or equal once all factors are taken into consideration. Canada is not bad, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, and France they all have pretty high standards of living and freedom. A lot of people have actually left the US for Canada. I would say don't let your guard down, don't assume, be suspicious of your government.

If I tell ya, I'll haveta kill ya.

The country I was born and raised in. The terrain is pristine blue ocean, rain forest, clean crisp air that smells like spices. Friendly well spoken citizens, a culture that lives by the honor system and more.

It is my secret place that I never tell anyone about, because I'm afraid of what you Government and Big business will do to it, all in the name of money.

yeah and its also the country who spends the 50% of the worlds natural resources every year (the rest of the 50% goes for the rest of the world).
its also the country who its always involved in a war for the benefit of sustaining their economy. its as well the country that will go to "help" to some other nations when it wasn't invited.
and for some extra PS
bush its the president
its not the center of western culture, every country has its own culture
promotes technologies, but not like Japan
to say which is the best country in the world, depends in what values you would be judging, in my opinion the states its far to be the best country in the world, probably would be Australia or New Zealand

the USA of course. Those who say another country is better aren't seeing the whole picture. Whereas many other countries have more freedom to do immoral things and other better things, at the same time those same countries have sky high taxes on everything (even having a television) and persecution from those who believe in God. Sweden recently jailed or did something to a minister and it is a very liberal country. The USA has it's problems (many caused by those coming here from other countries) but we have more freedom than the other countries. Singapore has a high standard of living but you can be fined or arrested for chewing gum.

The greatness depends on the country's real GREATNESS in all sense.Every person who loves his country believes that his own country is the greatest one. I think it will be better not to compare his country with other. If you love your country ,it is the greatest one for you.Is not so?

we are not the greatest we simply have better situations and ways of obtaining resources. But China is coming close and India as well and soon the US will have too much competition and its economy will probably diminish. There are wayy smarter people out there.
