I know Mexicans are from Mexico and Spaniards from Spain, but when someone says they are Spanish and you say "Mexican?" they will say, "Oh, same thing." I don't get it.

There are lots of different Hispanics who are not Spanish or Mexican. People from Central and South America, as well as Puerto Rico and Cuba are considered to be Hispanic, and although they might have some Spanish roots, they are not from Spain and are not Spanish, even though they speak the Spanish language. Hope that helps.

Spanish is a language. Mexican is a cutural designation.

My wife is from Peru. She speaks Spanish. The Spanish is slightly different in each country (i.e. Spain, Mexico, South America).

So, when they say they are Spanish they mean they are Latin.

Mexican is a nationality. Mexicans speak Spanish! Spainards speak Spanish also. They're not the same. Most Spainards are white. Whereas Mexicans are Latino/Hispanic they have white and Native American ancestry.

It isn't the same thing and it depends on who you talk to. Most Mexicans I know are very proud of their heritage and many have a lot of indian blood. They are proud of precisely who they are. At the same time, I have a hard time trying to explain why the term white is not appropriate. It's a one color covers all. Maybe it's not worth discussing.

It is an indication of racism, if you are talking about the language then Spanish is Spanish, just like English spoken in England, Australia, the US and Canada are still English. All latin american countries speak Spanish, but the people are not all Spanish, and Puerto Rican's are often refer to themselves as Spanish, but they are not.
