Cal Ripken has been my favorite baseball player since I was a kid so I agree with you that he is one of the best. Defensively I think Ozzie Smith would have to be considered a top choice. PeeWee Reese was a great one. Cal ushered in the new era of shortstops being offensive weapons as well. A-Rod, Tejada, and Jeter come to mind as the best offensively out of the current crop (even though A-Rod doesn't play the position anymore). Omar Visquel also has to be named as one of the best defenders but he never was quite the player that the others I've mentioned were.

If we're speaking offensively and defensively, without a doubt Alex Rodriguez is right up there. And, of course, Ozzie Smith. Cal was very consistent(to say the least) although I don't think he had the range of these other two or even Jeter for that matter. GOOD QUESTION!!! Could be debated for years, Hell, almost forgot about Koubek too. Now there was an infield. Clete Boyer on third, Tony SS, Bobby Richardson 2B, Moose Skowron 1st. (and I'm a fairly young guy (45) ) GREAT QUESTION!! You should get 10 points for this one!!

I agree with you that the iron man IS one of the greatest shortstops and arguably the greatest shortstop EVER.
Ernie Banks, Ozzie Smith, and Barry Larkin, Alan Trammal, Pee Wee Reece all come to mind with Ernie, Ozzie, and Cal the top 3 in my mind.

Being a big Cal Ripkin Jr. fan, it is hard to get an arguement out of me. However, the real answer is up to the person making the judgement and what to them quailifies as the best. Hitting average, feilding average, when they played, team results, etc.

It is Cal Ripken Jr by the way all the way. Ozzie Smith didn't have the power that Cal has. Cal could do everything.
