Many possibilities:
1) The wireless signal is interfering with something else. May be your cordless home phone, neighbors Internet signal or other interference. Try this: Open the web screen or method to control panel for the access point or router. Look for the "channel" setup. Usually it is defaulted to channel 10...pick any different channel. Set your PC for the same (usually rebooting will select the new channel). Interference solved? if not...
2) Check your SSID. I bet you used the default supplied with the router, same as all your neighbors. Change it to anything. Use something obtuse rather than BOBSHOUSE or such so your neighbors or passerby decide not to spy on you. Change it on your PC also, by reconfiguring the SSID to be the same as the accesss point. BTW, if you find it, set the SSID to "DO NOT BROADCAST". That way it is not presented for the neighbors to select from a list...it is slightly more secure. When you do this, of course, you will need to ADD the SSID to the properties screen of your wireless card.
3) If is possible that your Wireless network interferes with your home phone wireless (or that of the neighbor). Many use the same frequency. If so, do the same as #1, change the channel of the acces point until the interference goes away
4) CHeck the location of the access point. If ductwork, pipes or water heater or furnace is in the way. your signal may be too weak. Move the antenna and/or location to inprove the signal. This can be seem by how many green bars are present.
5) Is your internet speed adequate? If you are plugged into a dialup connection of 56kbs, the 10mbit wireless connection is bottlenecked by the slow internet. Like connecting a garden hose to a fire hydrant and expecting a lot of water....doesn;t happen.
6) The wireless router could be broken. Hard to diagnosis, but perhaps you can bring yours to a friend and try it...see if it inproves there.
7) There are firewall settings in some routers, turn that off and see if it improves.
8) Check if logging is turned on in the wireless router, that can cause slowdowns.
I would bet #1 or #3 is the cause...usually is.

You have a wireless from another computer or from a router? If it's from another computer, there are too many variables to check. If it's from a router, you simply have the computer you're on, the router, and the modem.
If it's connected directly to the router, try connecting directly to the modem. It might require some software settings and your internet provider can probably help with that. If that works well for you, contact the router manufacturer and bring up the issue with them.
If it doesn't work well, contact your ISP and let them know of intermittent connection. Check for common demoninators if you can - time of day, specific appliances turned on or off, etc.
Good luck with it.

I have the same problem - the computer downstairs has a direct connection to cable -- no problem.
The PC upstairs receives a weak signal and sometimes disconnects. Only solution I see would be to move the PC downstairs - which is not an option at this time.
You might consider moving your PC so that it gets a more uninterrupted signal.

Some cordless phones operate in the 2.4Ghz frequency range, which is the exact same frequency range that wireless networks operate on. That could be the reason if you're in or near an office that gets a lot of phone calls.

For Internet sharing on a different computer you need a router to be configured by your ISP.Or you may not have a wireless card install on your computer.

it sounds like you'll need a new router. call ATT and explain the problem and see if they can't diagnose a problem from their end first.
