Hi, like it's illegal to do it to give it to somebody else, right? Is that bassically because you are like "selling" or something like that, right? But I have a computer game that my sister has and we want to play it at the same time most of the time, but we can't (not like we can't share or anything). So would it be illegal to like, give it to someone in your family, or kind of, to give it to yourself.

What is the punishment, do they, like spy on you and give you a fine, do you go in jail? I think it's illegal when you sell it.

You are allowed to make a "back up copy" of all your software, but you cannot share it with others. With each software you are given 1 right (serial) to the software. That means it really can only be installed on one computer.

So say you have a game and you have it on computer #1. You want to play it on computer #2. You can, but you have to delete it from computer #1 first for it to be legal.

Also lots of games have serial number which if it's a game you play on the software company's server (NWN, EQ, WoW, etc) you have to have more than one serial number to play then.

So legally you can make copies, but you can't make copies and share with anyone even in you own home/family.

I make copies of my games and keep them in a CD carrier with a copy of the serial in case my original copy is lost or ruined (scratched, broken, etc).

There are many ways you can get caught. If you play online with some games and 1 serial number is being used at 1 time. Windows XP Home edition, I believe, has something that can track if your copy (of Windows) is legit. Some software look when you update.

Note: there is nothing illegal about making (1) backup copy for yourself in case something happens to your originally copy. You just can't sahre, give it away, or install the software on more computers than you have rights for.

If you have a copy of a game that is sold retail and you did not reimburse the company for your copy, then yes, it's still illegal. It's still a form of theft.

However, under most circumstances, companies do not pursue people that do as you're asking, as they have "bigger fish to fry" (people that are copying and distributing illegally on a large scale), and most likely the worst you'd face is possibly the company rejecting your use of additional services and requested updates.

Well, making ANY copy is illegal, no matter what you do with it, whether you sell it or share it. The copyright holder is the sole person/entity that can give you permission to copy their product. It doesn't matter if you sell it or not, it doesn't have to be for profit.

The "Fair Use" clause of U.S. copyright law allows copying for backup purposes.

as long as you do not submit it or use it for a school grade or sell it than i don't see the kind you will desire to get in difficulty yet utilising it for something is illegitimate and replica write infringement
