This 1st lady has not had much about her promoted. Of course her kids have kept her pretty busy. As an educator, one would think that she might have promoted educaton. If she had anything to do with "No Child Left Behind", she has wisely stepped back. She has had more vacations than many other 1st Ladys. Can't say Crawford, Texas has ever been high on most peoples list of places they'd like to see, but to each his/her own. I guess that makes her a nice traveling companion.

Wikipedia says -

"The first lady is not an elected position, carries no official duties, and brings no salary. Nonetheless, she attends many official ceremonies and functions of state either along with or in place of the president. The first lady also frequently participates in humanitarian and charitable work. Furthermore, many have taken an active role in campaigning for the president with whom they are associated."

support the president, be a good role model for all american women, wives and mothers. take on special projects like Nancy Reagan's say no to drugs campaign, or Laura Bush's reading programs. Roselyn Carter had her pet charities and projects just like all other first ladies. mostly i think they need to sit there and look pretty, which is easier for some.

She has no official duties, but some, like Eleanor Roosevelt and Jackie Kennedy, are quite active. Many believe Hillary Clinton actually ran the government. I doubt that, but they can get publicity easily and use it for various causes if they're so inclined.

In the case of the current one - not much. She doesn't even read "My Pet Goat" to kids. She reminds me of June Cleaver on "Leave It To Beaver" - a housewife - or as they're known now, a "homemaker." (Must be politically correct or someone will report me.)
