We only have one modem but want to connect with 2 laptops at the same time. Is it as simple as just buying another broadband modem? Might there already be one on my PC, or do we have to have one hooked up to the phone line? Can we use it at the same time?

Am also looking into wireless routers, but I just wanted to see if this was an option too.

You can use only one modem. Add a router onto the modem be it wireless or not. Most are wireless now days. That way you can either hard wire it with a cat5 patch cable or go wireless if you have an internal or external wireless card installed on the laptop.

Of course you can connect both pc to one router as long as it is a broadband router and has more than 1 ethernet port on the back, if you dont want to go to the expense of buying wireless gear, and both pc,s are close together just get a network cable from a decent pc shop and network the two pcs together not forgetting to allow other users to share connection on main pc.

other than doing that yes get wireless it is less hassle

I would suggest getting a wireless router with built in ADSL modem. You ISP can give you a list of the devices they support use the router as you modem then get two wireless adaptors for your laptops. they are quite easy to configure through Windows XP. Just make sure you set up a network password on the routers configuration page.

Nope, you dont need another modem, all you need is a router and set that up, then you will be able to use broadband with both the pc's!!
And a wireless card or usb for the second pc!

Wireless is the best option for you. You need to buy a wireless router (£70 max) also a wireless card for the other pc (£25 max). Go for it and dont forget to lock the network after you have set it up.....
