I lived there for a year, had a great time, and all of the non-tourist Americans, Brits, Aussies, and Canadians I met had a saying.

"Cool people have a cool time with the French".

Do you agree?

To follow up.
Most French admire Americans very much. Our popular culture is everywhere there. They just despise the backwoods cowboy hick swagger stuff. And I agree.

Also, I was constantly embarrassed by the rude Americans there. Not everyone, but quite a few. The French are right to treat them rudely in kind.

lkarl K - By "cool" I mean being respectful in a foreign country, maybe even learning the language a bit, and not running around like a loud mouthed American jerk in public and treating the place like a theme park. Know what I mean? Probably not.

I adore the french as well. They have a wonderful culture, cuisine, sense of humour, art, fashion and joie la vive. Those who judge others by stereotype or preconceived notions lose out on the opportunity to celebrate other countries, cultures and traditions. I pity those people because they live in a miserable little world of their own design and will never be able to enjoy the world and it's multicultural beauty.

No, I have serious issues with the French, and have been there many times. However I want to clarify a few points - one I do not hate anybody I have no reason to hate, and only one person from the many who I have justifiable reason to do so. Hate is a strong emotion, and anybody who bounces it around and directs it at a whole population is seriously ignorant of that population, and any humanity.

Secondly, I have issues with Parisians, not the majority of French folks, whom I quite enjoy the company of. However, as an English Man, I have found the Parisians, well about 85% of them to be the most obnoxious and rude folks I have ever had the misfortune to encounter, and this is from a man who has been to New York, Beirut, Jerusalem and Baghdad. I do speak some French as well as German and Croatian - so I am not the average 'Brit' on holiday.

I now avoid traveling through Paris if I possibly can, and have refused invitations to the Biblioteck National for the same reason. That said, I adore the Loire Valley, and regularly pop across to Normandy when the Parisians are not on mass holidays.

I think it's like any place you go. There will be the good and the bad. I've been to Paris twice, I've met some really cool people there. I've also met those assh*le stereotypes. The kind that laugh at you when you try to speak french and make you feel like a retard.

I lived in Paris for 3 months, and I love French people. I did, however, see some very rude fellow Americans that I was embarrassed by.

I have been to France. Its a terrible country, I hope to never return. The people, the food, the sights, there is nothing appealing about it. England is a grand country, but France is simply a dirty and odd land that I do not like

I agree with you.
It is terrible that this stupid national rivalry exists.
The French helped us during the revolution and we helped them with WW2 and building up their nation and Europe.
It is a stupid myth that they hate us that is propagated by the media.
Perhaps we could find a friend in France if only we didn't believe all we hear and see.

Yep, you shouldn't judge a country before going there and French from France aren't like French from Quebec.

I don't hate the French, I just don't like that silly accent they have when they try to speak English. Have you ever tried their food? Snails with cheese and bread crumbs!! ( French fries aren't really french) I especially like they way they always seem to support countries that would like to topple the USA, You know, Libya, Iran, Syria, all those nice guys.....

never been, but your word is good enough for me. i am pretty sure that i am not cool so i dont suppose i would not get along well there. but i dont hate them or dislike them in the least, they can be rude to whomever they want for whatever reason they want.
i am assuming that by cool that you mean dope smoking, liberal, no personal responsibility or behavioral standards or moral guidelines to speak of.
