it may sound daft but there are 2 things you could try the 1st is tilt your pelvis forward and try an stick your bum out of the water this will allow your legs to be closer to the surface so kicking is more effective and the
2nd is control your breathing
if you go in the water an ly on your back take a deep breath you will find you float if you breathe out fast you will sink but if you breath slowly an steady you will float for longer so try this when swimming on your front
Hope it helps

Hey Brady, do you have a Y near you? Maybe you can go to the pool when it's not crowded and just hang out in the shallow end to get used to floating near the edge of the pool. Start off with the "dead man's float" (face down). I know you don't want an instructor, but if you are embarassed maybe you can get someone who is a lifeguard at the pool to tutor you privately. You want to learn good habits. Think about it like driving. You wouldn't just get in a car and get on the highway, right? You start in a parking lot or a quiet street with a qualified driver next to you. If you can't afford lessons then you can maybe trade some work for it (like if you're good at some other sport you can teach them).

Oh I forgot to mention that if you live in a big city that your city probably has lessons for free or at least access to the pool for free. I live in Chicago and there are a ton of indoor pools.

Do research and that should tell you alot and you could always take lessons its nothing to be ashamed about because the point is at least your trying and theirs not specifically one tip but breath control is the best I mean if you are ever going to do competive swimming but for recreational then just work on getting better and treading water just move your arms and legs in circles or around to prevent from sinking and when floating keep your head up straight dont look down and push your hips up.

Um, i'm not really sure what to tell you, except doing what the guy told you to do, start in the shallow end of the pool ect... It sucks for you that your 19 and you dont know how to swim yet, me and my brother when we was not very old, my grandma took us out in the lake (bout up to her knees) and dropped us and said either you learn to swim or you sink.. Well we learnt how to swim that way.. and we are both excellent swimmers..

Go to yoru local YMCA or a park district pool and just practice in the shallow end until you can swim. It would be alot easier if you had an instructer though.

Well get a book off the internet which will teach you how to swim.. It's difficult to explain through the internet or a book though without watching you. I would suggest a trainer to be honest, there's nothing to be ashamed about.. My uncle's 50 and he can't swim!!
Good luck - and don't give up - you'll regret it!

look up Gertrude Edderly on WikiPedia. She swam the English Channel back in the day. She may have wrote a book that will tell you. Or, look-up the swimming hall of fame website (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) they would have plenty of resources to teach you. Good luck.

I think that some recreation centers might have adult swimming classes. Have you checked out your local YMCA? They might have information.
