wow... your teachers must be sooo proud.
Africans are from Africa. As far as I'm concerned, African Americans are people who migrated from Africa to America, by choice. I'm black and while I do know that I have African Ancestry. I am not from Africa. Never been there, don't know anything about the culture or anything about my African Ancestors. So, I consider myself black. Besides, thats what people see when they look at me anyway.
And, not all Africans have black skin. Take the actress Charlize Theron for instance. She's from South Africa. Technically, she's white, but shes more of an African American than I am.
There is obviously nothing wrong with being African. I wish I did know more about my ancestry. But, I don't. So, I don't really claim to.
P.S... All of humankind originated in Africa, so should EVERYONE go around claiming to be African????

An African person was born in and holds a passport from any of the countries that make up the continent of Africa.
An African-American is an African person who has become a citizen of the U.S.
Note that not all Africans have dark skin.
People born in America should properly be called Americans, regardless of their color.

My neighbor's father( a black man), came from Africa in the 1930s or so, and became a citizen making him an African-American, my Neighbor was born and raised in the U.S. and calls himself an AMERICAN. I guess it is what an individual chooses to be called, But I know several black people who's families have been in this country longer than mine so I see them as Americans as am I.
I am also of Norwegian,Irish,Scottish,German,
French, and English heritage. Hyphenate that LOL

African-Americans were born in America while Africans either immigrated or are just visiting the country.

Well the difference is African Americans are descendants of African slaves. African Americans aren't "full blooded". Many African Americans possess European, Native American and, to a lesser degree, Asian ancestry due to slavery. Africans are "full blooded". They aren't mixed with White or Native American Ancestry.

Good question. But African Americans should stard dropping the "African" bit because, frankly they are no longer African. And Africans on the other should not be bothered with Black American liberation movements and the stuff like the Million man march and all that because it is not their business.
If Black people in America want to be called "African" they should move to Africa, instead of using a name that no longer applies.

Africans live in Africa and African-Americans live in America.
North Africans would not be considered black, nor would the descendants of white settlers who live in Africa.
