I know it is easy to be drawn into a conversation but do you repeat things when you don't know whether something is true or know that it can be hurtful to the other person. Why do people do this?

To feel important, as if they know more than anyone else - be it true, or not. If they gossip to you about someone else, they will talk about you to others. Beware of anyone who gossips!

I do not gossip, and if I happen to know the truth, or think the gossip-monger is speculating or out and out lying, I will try to set them straight.

Some people feel that gossiping shows that they know what is going on around them. Others, as you have said, do it only to be spiteful or hurtful, as if this makes them a better person than the one they are gossiping about. They do not seem to care or realize how small it makes them apear. They have also forgotten the ultimate guideline for interpersonal relationships, The Golden Rule.

"I don't go around repeating rumors,
So you better be sure and listen close the first time!"
-from the song on the old HeeHaw tv show.-

Good question. It is very hard not to listen in on juice tid bits of gossip. I personally try not to repeat it unless the person I tell has no idea who the gossip is about. I think we do it to make ourselves feel better about our own situations. Gossip is a vicious thing.

No I think it is a horrible thing. I don't even allow people to gossip to me, I stop them in their tracks. Even if I mistakenly overhear something, I don't repeat it because it is not my job. For example, boyfriends brother's girlfriend told me how my boyfriends family thinks I starve my baby and I am stuck up so on and so on. Well I happened to overhear them putting her down as well but rather then say well they said this about you, I just told her that everyone is entitled to their opinion and I moved on. Gossip creates problems and it is not worth it.

to make themselves look big and clever. one of my best friends gossips about everything and everyone, and sometimes i think it does some damage.
i admit that i do gossip sometimes, but i try not to make it much of a big thing, and would never want to hurt peoples feelings, because i don't like it when people gossip about me!

i don't gossip because i would not like if peaple are sayin' things about me behind my back. Peaple do this because they feel like it & have nothin' better to do. They don't think about what they're doin' they just do it.

It stems from pride and possibly low self-esteem. I don't like to and I do my best to try not to, especially engage in it or listen to it.
