I would say respect first. Without respect, there can be no true communication, and without open and honest communication, there can be no real trust.
Two people, meeting for the first time, if they don't have respect for one another from the beginning, nothing else will ever be accomplished between them.

Respect has to come first. You see someone and recognise (of course) that there are another human, so you respect them just for that.
Then there has to be communication before you know whether you can trust that person.
