Well you have to have some pride... like all things in life, pride is a spectrum. Without enough of it, you'll have no self-esteem. With too much you'll have a massive ego. You want to sit somewhere in the gray area. Also, you should direct pride outward to your peers as it makes them feel better about themselves. Don't lie and they'll them they did something good when they really didn't, because that creates ego, as well.

Pride is a path to joy.

All those people who keep rehashing mistranslations of Buddhist philosophy; insisting that pride is the source of ego and must be abolished are, have their heads on backwards. Pride is only one of many symptoms (or aspects) of normal human nature related to the perception of individuality. Unless you intend to spend your life meditating in an empty room attempting to overcome your condition (incarnation); which is actually a waste of the gift of life, there is no need to be so harsh.

By acknowledging yourself as an individual and perceiving yourself in relation to the world you can experience graciousness.

Pride is a result of our ego's need to feel good about itself. It is WAY over rated. Beyond a doubt it gets in the way of compassion and selflessness. So many bad things get done in the name of pride it should be obvious that it is a bad emotion.

It is difficult to reduce your pride and compete in todays dog eat dog world. Having huge egos is a way of life now and you have to contend with these people or get run over by them. Even if you need to have ego/pride in todays business world, you should strive to limit it.

I'd recommend you get a good book on Buddhism and read it if you have a chance. The more enlightened you are in Buddhism, the less ego you have. The ego (and the pride that comes with it) is an impediment to enlightenment.

Happy New Year!

I don't think its possible to rate pride. You say things are overrated if it seems better than it really is. If you are full pride and then you say its better than it really is, it'll sound kind of weird if you think about it.

pride is an affront to God and only an obstacle to righteousness.

Gay Pride isn't overrated. Understated, Chic, always in good taste...but overrated it is not.
