I have a 30 gallon tank currently occupied by 15 small (equal to or less than) inch long goldfish. What are other fish that are friendly with it them that are not algae eaters? I want to have a variety of fish in my tank.

Goldfish should be kept in species tanks and nothing is ideal to put with them. At anyrate, your tank is over stalked and in a month or two you'll need to upgrade, put on many extra filters and go crazy with water changes, get a bigger tank, give away fish or accept that many will die.

Generally the guide is an inch (including tail) of fish per gallon of water. Goldfish are so messy and dirty you want to go at least an inch of fish (including tail) per at least 2 gallons of water.

Remember that these are fish grow to about 14 inches and live about 20 years. I don't care how many people tell you how many times that they will only grown to the size of the tank it is a lie. The reason fish stop growing is because of nitrate spikes, so you let the water get so polluted they can't grow any more.

If you want to set up a couple of tanks and want one with goldfish and something else, so long as the goldies are comets you can attempt austrailian rainbows or some barbs. If you have fancies, keep them only with other fancies with the same number of fins.

I found this forum: http://www.goldfishparadise.com/forum/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=14 which discusses goldfish compatible tankmates. There aren't too many, because goldfish like their tank temperatures colder than most tropicals do.

That said, I have to agree with those that have said you're wildly overstocked in that tank. One inch long goldfish will not stay that size. Those are babies which will grow quickly -- if they're fancies up to 6" and requiring 15-20 gallons each, commons and comets up to a foot long and unsuitable for home aquariums as they do better in ponds.

Do you have an ammonia testing kit? I would highly recommend testing your water at least every other day so that you can do water changes as needed before levels rise enough to do permanent gill and organ damage to your fish.

You may like the looks of the huge, colorful schools crowded into the fishstore tanks, but those numbers are intended to be entirely temporary while the store sells them, and fishstores do constant, largescale maintenance on their tanks.

A 30 gallon tank can only support 1 goldfish all alone. Maybe 2 if you are careful. And that's fancy goldfish. If you have common, comet, or shubunkin goldfish, you need a 50 gallon tank for 1 or 2 fish. Take back a bunch of goldfish ASAP or you are going to have a massive die off.

well 15 gold fish is way to many! you shoudl only have 3 goldfish and nothing else! they need room to grow. that many fish and more will dirty up your water, causing you to do frequesnt water changes and putting alot of stress on the fish.. try sleeing 12 of them.. i dont know what other fish are compaitable. but african dwarf frogs do great wiht gold fish. i have 3 goldfish (one is a full grown black moor that i need to hands to pick out and put in a smaller tank when i clean it, YES goldfish so get large! considering he is too big for any net on the market... ) i alwsi have 2 smaller goldfish a algae eater and 4 african dwarf frogs.

goldfish can grow to be 10 inches long.. but sine you have 15 in that small of a tank they will stay about the same size and will have a shorter life expectancy. same with any other fish you end up puttign in there..

Personally, I wouldn't add anything else. The goldfish you have are just babies. They are going to GROW and they produce alot of waste. If you only have a 30 gallon tank, and you are wanting a large # of fish( 10 to 15) try several different types of tetras such as monks(red eyes) silver tetras, harliquin rasboras, etc. Goldfish can live with other fish fine, but you need ROOM. If you add more fish now, with 15 goldfish already in there, you arer going to experience problems and fish loss down the road. Maybe your store will take them back..maybe you can give them to someone with a pond or BIG tank..I wouldn't add to them, I would reccomend DECREASING what you have already. Sorry.

Your tank is much, much too small. I'm not even sure you could fit 15 full grown goldfish in a tank that size. Most will die, or become diseased if you do not take all but possibly one back. However, if you get a larger tank(much larger!!), or if you get rid of 99% of them, a good pairing for golfish is the dojo loach. Their water requirements are similar to goldfish, and they prefer colder water. They are fish with gigantic personalities, and are very active and friendly. Dojo loaches top out at about 8 in, usually, but I keep mine in a very large, natural biotope tank, and one of mine is now at about 10 in!!

well you can get catfish if you want. and black widow tetras and white gold clouds. i have these types of fish and they do not harm each others. and dont worry about the goldfish growing until there is no space, as the goldfish can cleverly modify its growth.

all that i can think of are goldifsh, plecos, sucker mouth cats, and cory cats! You can also put them with pond fish. No room for koi but you could get mosquito fish(kinda kewl actually), or Bitterling. Look here http://liveaquaria.com/product/scateg.cfm?pCatId=1499 !
