The term 'third world' was likely coined by the press or the UN to be applied to countries that are generally undeveloped and have difficulty feeding and employing their people. These are the poorer countries of the world, those without natural resources, those with large populations and a lack of adequate agricultural practices to feed them. Americans did not make these countries third world, and their existance as such is not dependant on what Americans think at all; an accident of history or geography brought them into existance and they haven't the resources to raise thernselves to a standard of living that would cause a change of world opinion. Americans recognize these and are their greatest benefactors. Most European countries are not considered third world because they have a means of support adequate for their populace and their people are more educated than those in countries traditionally considered third world.

Americans from the U.S.A. have become more and more isolated from the rest of the world, just as the Government has wanted. The news we have come to rely on has also become tampered with and only tells certain stories at a certain angle.
So naturally Americans are being told over and over that our country and technology is far more superior and better then other countries. There no longer exists an non bias news source that reports the reality of this nature, so naturally Americans have come to believe other countries are inferior to theirs. This is what the U.S. government is saying, the news is saying and in our own education - the very foundations of our youth, is telling us to believe.
I'm not justifying , Americans thinking other countries besides their own is third world, I'm just giving my opinion why this might be.
Take in consideration, about 15 miles from my house there is a town that has no running water, electricity and are living by third world standards, but way too many Americans esp. our government officials turn a blind eye to this. Sad isn't it!

not sure what the real definition of third world is exactly... i usually think of countries in africa when i hear third world. but you mention in europe... i think a few of the countries in europe that i would not want to live solely because they don't seem as advanced would be portugal, and most of the eastern european countries. i'm not saying these are horrible countries and i am sure many of the citizens are quite content -- but if i had my choice i woulden choose to live there. besides --- i already live in the best country GOD ever gave man -- why would i want to give that up.

A third world country is one in which the standard of living is very low and there are not the basics that we enjoy in the West. Things such as indoor plumbing, medical care, adequate food and water, shelter, etc.,

I thought "third world" was an obsolete term. Don't they now use "less developed" or something similar to describe very poor countries? I do not know enough about other, non-world power countries to make a judgment as to whether or not they could be classified as being underdeveloped or third world.

Many other countries do not have as high a standard of living as America. One Frenchmen observed that in America, even the poor are fat.
Politically, most other nations do not allow the freedom to enrich oneself by one's own efforts. They use layers of graft and corruption to prevent the rise of a middle class. Americans have enjoyed the benefits of relative freedom from that which causes them to think poorly of other political systems.
