If you have a weak stomach, how do you get rid of gory images stuck in your mind before they take a toll on your overall health?

If you consciously try to "banish" those images from your mind, they will come back stronger and more frequently. This is the basis of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Basically, you've got to experience the unpleasant images without letting it bother you and not thinking about it much—and without enacting a compulsion to distract your mind. This is a simplification of what psychotherapists do to treat OCD.

When the image comes to mind, immediately force yourself to think of something else, even if it's just a "blank" thought. This may have to happen numerous times over the course of hours, days or even weeks. Select the same specific thought/image every time so as to condition yourself to think of that instead of the image in question when presented with whatever triggers cause you to think of the undesired images.

I used this technique sucessfully to forget again something that I remembered years after having first learned it. I also use it to help shake the random repeating song fragments that get stuck in my head when I wake up in the morning.

There are also new drugs that can help block memories.

its funny you should ask this because I had some really whacked out images JUST before I was going to sleep I was like what the heck?! There were these scary devil children but anyways:

It helps to think of something else you saw during your day, people you know conversations that you had..

When I meditate I picture a sunny field with flowers and a lone tree, so if I see anything disturbing I go back to that. Create a "safe" place for yourself.

I know exactly what you mean but this might work for you, I hope it does. I had an "occasion" stuck in my mind that made me cringe and feel like you-know-what and embarrassed me to death. The whole schtick! After punishing myself with it for several years, I couldn't stand it anymore. So I devised a way of hamming it up using any scenario in my mind just for my own relief. I started reliving what it COULD have been. I would daydream that it was 10 times as silly or funny as it had really been disgusting. I finally made the whole affair one big tragic comedy like Mel Brooks movies until I had to laugh. It helps to forget the exact details too when you keep re-staging it. Make it a comedy until you are tired of it and it leaves your mind. Good Luck!!

Goodness, no. There's such a thing as manners and tact. You might think that someone looks hideous in what they're wearing, but there's no reason for you to say that, especially if you can tell that they really like it. People are prone to snap judgement and thoughts, and what makes us humans is that we don't automatically do exactly what our minds jump to, we are able to think rationally and censure out hurtful comments that would be no use to anyone or detrimental.

This is a symptom of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. You should probably let them come and eventually they will mean less and less to you. trying to push them away will make your reaction worse. tell yourself you can;t help it and you won't let it bother you. Go to www.webmd.com and look up OCD and see if you have any other symptoms. There are a lot of effective treatments for OCD. Good luck.
