Originally they were called "Tea Set"....but When Tea Set found themselves on the same bill as another band with the same name, Syd Barrett came up with an alternative name on the spur of the moment, choosing The Pink Floyd Sound (after two blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council). For a time after this they oscillated between 'Tea Set' and 'The Pink Floyd Sound', with the latter name eventually winning out. The word Sound was dropped fairly quickly, but the definite article was still used occasionally for several years afterward, up to about the time of the More soundtrack.

It's taken from the names of two Georgia bluesmen Pink Anderson and Floyd Council - from the early days when the band saw itself as a blues band.

Roger: Aww, bugger, there's another Tea Set playing this concert.
Syd: Give me a second.
*Syd's mind*: Cow Lick? Ell Ess Dee? Hrmmm... no, no...
Director dude: You're out in five minutes!
Syd: (thinks of two blues musicians he likes) Anderson Council... no, no, Pink Floyd!
Roger: Right, let's go with that!

Dramatization, but it's the basic idea.
