Yes, it was a Constiutional amendment.
16th Amendment: "The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration. "

The LAW you are looking for that requires you to pay income taxes is found in the "Internal Revenue Code or IRC." Go to the IRS website, www.irs.gov., and you can read and learn about the IRC in its splendid entirety. Another poster cited the correct Federal Statute where the IRC is found as its part of the United States Code within the Title cited. It says that all US Citizens are subject to a tax on income "from whatever source derived." That's why Al Capone went to jail. He did not pay taxes to the IRS on income that he made from bootlegging. Notice the IRC says "whatever source," even if it's an illegal source. Hope this helps!!

Yes. Taxes are allowed by the 16th (not 14th, that applies the 5th amend due process and equal protection to the states). There are federal crimes for not paying your taxes in the US Code. So, while there is nothing that says "you will pay your taxes" there are statutes that proscribe the penalities for tax evasion, lying, cheating, etc. Try 26 USC § 7201 for tax evasion and keep reading past that for more. Tax protesters can be prosecuted under this statute too.

Some years ago my co-workers joined this organization that doesn't believe in income tax. They said there is no law stating you must pay. Well maybe so but some bad things happened to them. One guy got a lean put on his house and was told to pay off his taxes in 3 years or they would put him in jail. Another co-worker of mine got money taken from her bank account. I also heard a story about this guy whose car was taken away.

Yes. The basis is the 16th Amendment to the Constitution, and the tax laws derived from that have been passed by successive republican and democratic governments.
"The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration. "

How many times can this question be asked and answered? If you believe there is no law stating you have to pay taxes, don't pay them. When the IRS gets done with you, you can write us from your prison cell and tell us what laws you broke.
