I know what you mean. I don't expect everyone to be able to spell every word correctly or get all their commas in the right place, as there is no way I could do that myself! But I just wish people would take a little bit more effort, I mean, you want the person to understand what you are saying.
The worst ones are the ones that use text chat. Putting 4's and 8's through their text. Drives me mad! Or speak in half sentences missing out all the connecting words.
If its that much of a hassle to write, then don't play on yahoo answers!

Today's world has become a truimph of quantity over quality.
I am pedantic where grammar and punctuation are concerned, and it isn't simply a case of being an old curmudgeon. Punctuation has a purpose, which is to help the reader understand the sentence, and to clarify potential ambiguities.
Let's take a sentence such as:
John fed the monkeys at the zoo who were playing about with his mother-in-law.
Unless you place a comma after the word 'about', your reader may be forgiven for placing the said mother-in-law in the cage, along with the joyful primates.
What a sad world it would have been, had Shakespeare, instead of writing the phrase, "To be, or not to be, that is the question", had written "Is it or wot? Innit!"
Hopefully, you will receive enough literate answers to restore your faith....

I would suggest that it is caused partly by laziness, and an attempt to speed up the typing process.
Unfortunately, the lack of punctuation and paragraphs make reading the text that much more difficult.
I find it interesting that whenever spelling or grammar is criticised, the perpetrators become abusive. The don't seem to understand the concept of communicating effectively and clearly.
I note that one respondent has called you a "grammar freak". This speaks volumes about their character.

I know what you mean, it's because people are lazy, but I can't say that because I do that. I don't capitalize letters because it makes typing that much faster when I'm typing. The only reason I'm using capitalization is because this is a grammer and punctuation question. I don't like when people say y, g2g, 4, 8, u, etc. It also bothers me when people don't use apostrophes on AIM.

It is infuriating isn't it? 'Text Speak' drives me even more mad! What an absolute load of boll ocks. I find myself having to really concentrate to read the shi t these people write and will not entertain answering a question written in this way. It is absolute laziness.
By the way - there is only need for one exclamation mark at the end of the sentence. Hee Hee!

well ave youse considered dat we is fickos oo dont unnerstand abaat dis punkynashun and grampa?
Or perhaps the use of Yahoo! Answers is almost like a chat room with everyone calling out an answer hoping that it will be read?
Either way the English Language has, in actual fact, gone slightly downhill in recent years. This is, in my opinion, partly due to 'Text-speak'.
Whilst the 'posters' on here do not tend to use the abbreviated version of the words they use, the basic laziness of the act of writing causes a lapse in the grammatical accuracy by losing most (if not ALL) of the required punctuation.
At least, people don't, over-punctuate, because, that's just, as annoying!

Correct punctuation and grammer appears to be a thing of the past. I'm not a big fan of the current "text speak" trend.

Why do people use incorrect grammar and punctuation on Yahoo Answers would have perhaps, been a better way of asking!

People either do not think it is necessary or (as evidenced by my high school students) they think grammar, spelling and punctuation exist in a vacuum that is a weekly grammar lesson. Good question! I get so annoyed by the simplest errors being made over and over and over again. (P.S. "sentence" doesn't have an "a")

The same reason why you don't use correct spelling. I don't think you are in a position to criticise literacy skills if you can't spell the word 'sentence' - most 6 years old can spell it correctly.
There are certain adjectives that should not be followed by a comma - this applies to numbers such as 'one'. So think again.
