Sephiroth hands down. The sorry S.O.B. has been killed like 6 times and he just won't stay dead.

Morgoroth and Sauron. freaky people... Both are from The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien (Morgoroth was the Dark Lord of the 1st Age, and Sauron reigned in the 2nd and 3rd Age. The 3rd Age is the setting of the trilogy and the 2nd Age ended when the Last Alliance of Men and Elves fought at Mt. Doom and Sauron was defeated by Isildur with Narsil, Sword of Elendil)
If it's from ANY point of view, i would say either Light or "L" from Death Note. They're not exactly evil people (Light is killing criminals with Death Note to create a utopia, and "L" is trying to find Light and extract justice upon him), but their intelligence freaks me out.
P.S. No one knows L's real name, so people just call him "L"
I agree with Jen that Darth Vader is an iconic villian in history. I guess it's because we can easily relate to Vader in terms of protecting others, etc...

I would have to say Sauron from The Lord of the Rings, because he is ultimately evil. I am a huge fan of Harry Potter, but I think with the movie, they made him seem too "friendly" because he got into a conversation with Harry. Unlike Sauron, who just would kill in spite, and wouldn't give the chance for his enemy to talk.

Daniel Quilp in The Old Curiosity Shop by Dickens. He's thoroughly evil but he enjoys being evil, he finds it vastly amusing. Whether it's ruining Little Nell's grandfather or tormenting his mother-in-law, he does it all with enormous style and enjoyment.

Dorian Gray
By the end of the book, he's completely defiled and devoid of ethics, but he's still a realistic villain.
