I would have to say Johannes Gutenberg and the printing press. Because he made it possible for more books to be printed, he gave the common man the ability to become better educated. Being able to read and inform oneself is key to changing society. Once the people were less ignorant, because those in power could no longer lie about the written word, the whole world changed.

A society is built on the contributions of many therefore defining one individual who contributed to modern society seems somewhat simplistic. But for sake of the question I will have to say that scientists have made the biggest contribution because they challenge law, order and common belief. If everyone just accepted answers without any fact, research or question we would all be a bunch of animalistic robots with no goals and no reason to live other than to just exist.

It was galileo galilei...Because he kept doing his study about physics when the inquisition was around. He stood to his ideas and never backed down even when he was on the verge of his death. If it wouldn`t be for him newton wouldn`t have what to continue(he perfected galilei`s work).Imagine this world with a very low physical evolution.Things, machines, biological knowledge(and every other excisting science)would be backward from what it`s now. Most of the things we use today are built with knowledge about physics. There is no developed technology if physic would be backward...

Ernesto "Che" Guevara "The most complete man in existance"
Showed the world exactly how every man should be. He left his rich life in Argentina to help those in need, and even after recieving immortality and comfort for life he went on to help more, throwing a comfortable life away.
That in turn showed the world what every human being should be like, and has immensly influenced the planet we live on.

Hitler. The modern world would still be dominated by military empires if WWII hadn't shown us how destructive war can be. There would also still be hatred towards racial and religious groups if the Nazis hadn't been such a shining example of racism. Hitler made us better by showing us how bad people can be.

I don't know. Taking out Americans takes a good sized chunk away of alot of scientists and inventors. I would say Einstein but he became an American so that rules him out.
