This is not a DIY job if you have never seen it done. Hire a pro and have a routine PM done. Watch them so you can do it the next time.

I presume it is the oil filter you are talking about, not the furnace filter. It is part of a furnace service. Unless you are planning on tuning up the furnace yourself, leave it to the service person to do it. It is a little messy if you are not experienced, and can result in an oil spill you will be responsible for. It is not a spin-on filter like a car filter, it is a cartridge filter. The tune-up will be a flat fee plus parts. I have had oil heat for 30 years, and have always let the service person do it.

If you have ever changed the filter on your car oil system you'll be able to change this filter. Be sure the pressure on the line is off and counter clock wise unscrew the filter and replace with the new filter. Good luck and I hope you have that type of system to do this as easy as it sounds.
