My friend said her doctor did not and that they dont normally do it but all of my other friends said they definitely do it and they all had it done, 10+ girls I talked to. If they don't do an ultrasound, how do they know that that it is still alive? I know that is terrible to say but I have known many women that had a miscarriage before 8 weeks but did not know as they did not "pass" it and only found out through ultrasound.

If you already made the appointment, they should have told you that they would do an ultrasound. I had my first appointment at about 9 weeks and I did have one, but they told me I would ahead of time when I first called. So just call the doctors office on Monday and find out, simple as that. I have found that most do an early one, but not all. And it's not always vaginal, unless they really have problems finding the baby, since that early in pregnancy the baby is still very low. Mine was an over-the-belly and they found the baby right away at 9 1/2 wks. ( I have my next one on wednesday, and we find out what we're having, yay!!)

If they have the vaginal ultrasound, they'll generally use it for an early pregnancy ultrasound.

I delivered my son in July. Because I have irregular cycles, I was sent for an early ultrasound to determine my due date more accurately. At first they used the regular ultrasound. By the time I'd drank 64 ounces of water to inflate my poor bladder, the tech decided I had to have the vaginal ultrasound. The vaginal ultrasound gives a better picture at so early in pregnancy and it's easier to get a picture since the baby is so tiny yet.

Otherwise, you really don't have any confirmation of the baby's status until around 12 weeks when you can detect the heartbeat with the doppler at the office. But if you're feeling okay and not having any signs or symptoms of miscarriage, don't worry yourself with it.

Best of luck!

In almost every case they do a vaginal to get a better look at the baby. Some doctors are quacks, and it seems like your friend's doctor is one of them. My sister's doc is one, too. Her doctor told her that the only reason a woman gets morning sickness is because she doens't know she is pregnant. Come on now, what medical school did that doctor go to so I can make sure my own aren't from there? LOL. Anyway, I had the vaginal with both of my children. You only feel like something is there. It's weird, but it needs to be done.

Usually an ultrasound is not done until the 12 week. You don't know until then, that is why the first tri-mester is such a worry and why people wait to spread the news. Sometimes an early U/S is done if there have been previous problems, such as previous miscarriages or ectopic pregnancies. Sometimes also if you are really worried about it and insist, your doc will order one.

Depends on the doctor. My doctor did for me. I had a ultrasound done every week for the first ten weeks because they thought something was wrong.

I don't know anyone who's had one. As far as I know its ONLY EARLY in pregnancy and ONLY for really high risk situations. anyway, at 9 weeks, you're far enough to be able to do a regular unltrasound.

Good luck.

they probably wouldn't do one unless they needed to, like if you are having problems or it is a high risk pregnancy or something. the way they know the baby is alive is by listening to the heartbeat with a doppler. you will get to listen to the heartbeat during every appt.
