You want to get y by itself.

To remove the 31/11, you want to subtract it. Make sure you subtract it on both sides to keep the equation balanced!

3 - 31/11 = y/242 + 31/11 - 31/11
3 - 31/11 = y/242 + 0
3 - 31/11 = y/242

To remove the 242, you want to multiply it. Make sure you multiply it on both sides to keep the equation balanced!

242*(3 - 31/11) = 242*(y/242)
242*(3 - 31/11) = y*242/242
242*(3 - 31/11) = y

Now, you just need to simplify your answer:

y = 242*(3 - 31/11)
= 242*(33/11 - 31/11) (common denominator is 11)
= 242*(2/11)
= 484/11
= 44

multiply all the terms by 242,

3*242=y+(31/11)*242

then swap the y around with the 3.

-y = -3*242 + (31/11)*242

then multiply everything by -1

y = 3*242 -(31/11)*242

when you have an equation with just one variable it's called (understandably) a single variable equation. Your goal is simply to manipulate the equation until the variable is by itself on one side of the equation, and the other side is a simplified expression.

Your problem has the added complication of containing fractions. However, these are easily gotten rid of by multiplying through both sides of the equation by the LCD of all the fractions. In this case, the LCD is 242. So,
242*3 = 242*(y/242+31/11)
726 = y+682
726-682=y
44=y

OK first you need to move everything thats not y on to the other side

3-(31/11) = y/242

Then you can do the next step 2 ways

1)you can multiply 242 on both sides to cancel
------ 242(3-(31/11))=y
2)Or you can fing the common denominator first
-----99/33 - 93/33=y/242
----- 6/33=y/242
Then you can multiply both sides by 242 to get y
-----242(60/33)=y
THe answer should be { y= 44 }

3= y/242+31/11
2/11= y/242 (subtract 31/11)
y= 44 (multiply 242)

You have to get y on it's own on one side. So first move the 31/11 to the other side (change it's sign)
3 - 31/11 = y/242
Now move the /242 to the other side - it becomes a x242
242(3-31/11) = y
So y = 44

"Y" is a value/number.

First: eliminate fractions > multiply the denominators (242, 11) by everything:

(242)(11)(3) = (242)(11)(y/242) + (242)(11)(31/11)

Sec: cancel "like" terms and combine remaining terms:

(242)(11)(3) = (11)(y) + (242)(31)
7986 = 11y + 7502

Third: solve for "y" by isolating it on one side>subtract 7502 from both sides and divide everything by 11:

7986 -7502 = 11y + 7502 - 7502
484 = 11y
484/11 = 11y/11
44 = y

y = 44

3 = y/242 + 31/11

Let "a" = 31/11
Let "b" = 242

Just makes it a little cleaner and easier to work with.

3 = y/b + a

Now, solve for "y".

y/b + a = 3
==> y/b = 3 - a
y = b(3 - a)

That's it....I will let you substitute the values of "a" and "b" and do the arithmetic.
